The date range is established and the addressee conjectured from CD’s residence in Down from September 1842 onwards (Correspondence vol. 2, Appendix II). William Baxter and William Walmisley Baxter were chemists in Bromley with whom CD regularly did business.
Carbonate of ammonia (ammonium carbonate) was used by CD for his health (see Correspondence vol. 12, letter to J. D. Hooker, 13 April [1864]), and in his botanical work (see Correspondence vol. 21, letter to Edward Frankland, 12 July 1873).
