Alexander Burns Usborne

1808–85

Naval officer. Master’s assistant then master on HMS Beagle, 1831–5. Took command of a small schooner and surveyed the coast of Peru, 1835–6. Master on the Beagle in Australia, 1838–9. Surveyed the coasts of England and Ireland, 1847–65. Created staff commander, 1863; captain, 1867. Retired in 1868.
