Darwin Correspondence Project

To Arnold Dodel   23 December 1874

Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

Dec 23. 74

My dear Sir

I am much obliged for your kind letter of Dec 13. I shall be extremely glad to see a work on evolution written by a Botanist, but I am sorry to say that your book has not reached me.1 If it has been lost in the transit, pray do not send me another copy, as I can easily order one & will esteem it as if it came direct from you. If however it was sent through a bookseller, perhaps it will yet arrive. I am glad to hear of the success of your lectures, as by this means you will probably educate some young naturalists in the right faith2

With much respect & my best thanks I remain dear Sir | Yours faithfully | Charles Darwin

Footnotes

In his letter of 13 December 1874, Dodel announced that he had sent CD a copy of his Die neuere Schöpfungsgeschichte nach dem gegenwärtigen Stande der Naturwissenschaften (New history of creation according to the present state of science; Dodel 1875). There is a lightly annotated copy in the Darwin Library–CUL. See also letter to Arnold Dodel, 27 December 1874.
