To Anne Barnard   31 March [1871]1

Down. | Beckenham | Kent. S.E.

March 31st

My dear Mrs. Barnard

I am very much obliged to you for your kindness in writing to me.2 I had read that the insane (& therefore probably idiots) are apt to have deformed ears, so that I wrote some weeks ago to the Doctor of a large Asylum, asking him to observe about the “points”, but have not as yet received any answer.—3

It is indeed very many years since we met.— To the last day of my life I shall think of your Father with the deepest respect, and affection, & gratitude for his invariable kindness towards me.4

Pray believe me | yours truly obliged | Ch. Darwin
