The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from G. E. Harris, 3 March 1862 (see Correspondence vol. 10).
In his letter of 3 March 1862 (Correspondence vol. 10), Harris had requested a copy of Origin because he could not afford to buy it. John Murray was CD’s publisher. This letter was found inside a copy of Origin 3d ed.
