William Branwhite Clarke

1798–1878

Clergyman and geologist. Attended Adam Sedgwick’s lectures on geology while an undergraduate at Jesus College, Cambridge. Emigrated in 1839 to Australia, where he carried out extensive geological surveys. Discovered gold in New South Wales in 1841. Incumbent of St Thomas’s, North Sydney, New South Wales, 1846–71. FRS 1876.
