Ernst Leopold (Ernst) Salkowski

1844–1923

German physiological chemist. Studied medicine in Königsberg, receiving his doctorate in 1867. Studied in Vienna, Tübingen, and Heidelberg before becoming an assistant at the chemical laboratory of the Pathological Institute for Medical Chemistry in Berlin in 1872. Professor extraordinarius of medical chemistry, Berlin, 1874. Head of the chemical laboratory, Pathological Institute for Medical Chemistry, 1880. Honorary professor of physiology, 1909. Recognised the basic differences in metabolism of herbivores and carnivores, discovered tissue autolysis, and studied the chemistry of urine.
