Charles Sprague Sargent
1841–1927
American botanist. Graduated from Harvard in 1862. Served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Travelled in Europe, 1865–8. Director of Harvard Botanic Garden, 1872–3; first director of the Arnold Arboretum, Harvard University, 1873. Arnold Professor of arboriculture at Harvard, 1879–1927.
