George S. Anderson
1849–1915
American soldier. Graduated from West Point, New Jersey, 1871; second lieutenant in the sixth cavalry, serving in Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico, 1871–7; assistant professor of natural and experimental philosophy at West Point, 1877–81; service in Arizona and Colorado, 1881–3; captain and superintendent of Yellowstone Park, 1883–98; major and commander of the thirtieth US volunteer infantry in the Philippines, 1898–1901; lieutenant-colonel of the sixth cavalry, 1901–3; colonel of the eighth cavalry; 1903–6. From 1906–12, his commands as brigadier general included the first cavalry, chief of staff of the department of the east, the ninth cavalry, and department of the Visayas in the Philippines.
