Charles Sissmore Tomes
1846–1928
Dental surgeon. Younger son of the dental surgeon John Tomes. Studied at Christ Church, Oxford, King’s College and the Middlesex Hospital, London. LDS and MRCS, 1869. Joined his father’s practice. Curator of the Odontological Society Museum, 1874–80, and compiled its first catalogue. Wrote the Manual of dental anatomy, human and comparative (1876), and edited and enlarged John Tomes’s System of dental surgery. Painted under the name Charles Sissmore. FRS 1878.
