James Gay Sawkins

1806–78

Artist and geologist. Emigrated to the US in 1819. Worked as a portrait and landscape painter and as a mineral prospector, travelling in the US, Mexico, Cuba, Hawaii, and Australia. Returned to England in 1855. Assistant and artist on the British geological surveys of Trinidad, British Guiana, and Jamaica.
