Botanist. Collected plants in South America, 1833–4; in South Africa, 1838–9. Accompanied Charles Lyell to Madeira in 1853. Justice of the peace and deputy lieutenant for Suffolk; high sheriff, 1868. Succeeded to the baronetcy, 1860. FRS 1851.
