James Arndell Youl
1811–1904
Australian agriculturalist and magistrate. Farmed in Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), 1827–54. Lived in London from 1854; honorary agent for Tasmania, 1861–3, and honorary secretary and treasurer of the Australia Association. Co-founder of the Colonial Society, 1868. Discovered a means of transporting live fish ova from Britain to Tasmania, Australia, and New Zealand. Knighted, 1891.
