Andrews Norton
1786–1853
American biblical scholar and professor of theology. Graduated from Harvard College in 1804. Studied for the ministry at Harvard, while publishing poetry and criticism. Appointed Dexter Lecturer of Biblical criticism, Harvard College, 1813; became a polemical leader of Unitarianism, while also pursuing literary interests. Promoted to Dexter Professorship of sacred literature, 1819, dominating the new Harvard Divinity School; resigned because of poor health in 1829. Continued his scholarship independently.
