Edward Lear

1812–88

Artist and writer. The first ornithological illustrator to work from life. Employed by Lord Stanley, thirteenth earl of Derby, from 1831 drawing and painting animals and birds; turned to landscape painting, and then moved to Italy for his health in 1837. Published his first illustrated book of nonsense verse in 1846. Returned to England in 1849, but lived abroad for extended periods from 1854.
