Phineas Taylor Barnum
1810–91
American entrepreneur, showman, and circus owner. Founded Barnum’s American Museum in New York, displaying animals and curiosities, in 1842. Made a lucrative tour of England with the dwarf Tom Thumb, 1844–7. Opened a circus in Brooklyn in 1871.
