Thomas Guthrie

1803–73

Scottish minister and philanthropist. Studied at Edinburgh University and the Sorbonne. Ordained minister, 1830. Moderator of the Free Church general assembly, 1862. Known for his founding of schools for poor children and his philanthropic work, as well as for the popularity of his sermons.
