William Thomas Doyne
1823–77
Irish-born engineer. Trained as a civil engineer on the London Southwestern Railway, 1840. Worked on a number of railways from 1843 to 1850. Served with the Army Work Corps in the Crimean War in 1851, then worked in India and Ceylon. Went to New Zealand in 1859; employed by the government from 1861 in connection with harbours and rivers, and served on the Commission on Railways. Established a private practice in Melbourne, Australia, in 1866.
