Pringle Stokes
1794–1828
Naval officer. Son of Charles Stokes, master mariner, and his wife Elizabeth; baptised at Fort William, Bengal, India. Commander of the Beagle, 1826–8. Committed suicide during the Beagle’s first voyage to South America.
