George James Stebbing

1803–60

Scientific instrument maker. Son of a mathematical instrument maker in Portsmouth. Supernumerary, at Robert FitzRoy’s expense, on the Beagle. Employed to maintain the scientific instruments, especially the chronometers, on board. Established a scientific instruments business in Portsmouth in 1841. Checked and delivered barometers on behalf of the Meteorological Department of the Board of Trade, 1858–60.
