American geologist, geographer, and educationalist. Student of Louis Agassiz at Harvard. Captain of the Fifth Kentucky Battery during the American Civil War. Classified fossils at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard. Accompanied Agassiz on his 1865 expedition to Brazil. Lecturer in palaeontology, Harvard, 1868; professor, 1869; professor of geology, 1888. Director of the Kentucky Geological Survey, 1872. Director of the Atlantic Coast Division of the US Geological Survey, 1884–1900. Dean, Lawrence Scientific School, Harvard, 1891–1904.
