German-born explorer, diplomat, and naturalist. Explored British Guiana under the direction of the Royal Geographical Society, 1831–5. Government commissioner for surveying and establishing the boundaries of British Guiana, 1841–3. British consul, San Domingo, 1848; Bangkok, 1857–64. Knighted, 1844. FRS 1859.
