Albert Regnard

b. 1836

French surgeon and political writer. Trained in medicine at La charité, Paris, and the University of Strasbourg. Translated Ludwig Buchner’s Kraft und Stoff (Matter and energy) into French in 1865. Edited a radical newspaper, La Libre Pensée, 1866–7, campaigning for political reform through science and atheism. Served as secretary-general of the prefecture of police during the Paris Commune in 1871. Promoted radical socialism, racial science and anti-semitism in the 1880s and 1890s.
