Joseph Priestley

1733–1804

Theologian and natural scientist. Educated for the dissenting ministry and spent most of his adult life as a teacher or preacher. Prolific writer on theology, history, education, metaphysics, and scientific subjects. Became the chief propagandist for Unitarian beliefs in England. Increasing signs of political persecution prompted his emigration to the United States in 1794.
