Joseph Ellison Portlock
1794–1864
Military engineer and geologist. Commissioned in the Royal Engineers, 1813; second captain, 1830; brevet-major, 1846; regimental lieutenant-colonel, 1847; retired from active service with the honorary rank of major-general in 1857. Served in Canada, 1814–22. Engaged on the ordnance survey of Ireland, 1824–43. Inspector of studies, Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, 1851–6. President of the Geological Society of Ireland, 1838, 1839, 1851, 1852; of London, 1857 and 1858. FRS 1837.
