John Murray

1841–1914

Canadian-born marine scientist and oceanographer. Went to Scotland to complete his education; studied at the University of Edinburgh, 1864–5, 1868–72, but did not graduate. Worked under Peter Guthrie Tait on the construction of an electrical deep-sea thermometer. Prepared scientific apparatus for the Challenger expedition, 1872; naturalist to the expedition, 1872–6. Chief assistant, Challenger office, Edinburgh, 1876–82; director, 1882–95. Editor of the Report on the scientific results of the voyage of HMS Challenger (1880–95). Knighted, 1898. FRS 1896.
