German-born explorer and botanist. Emigrated to Australia in 1847. Government botanist, Victoria, 1852. Botanist to the North West Australia Expedition, 1855–7. Director of the Botanical Gardens, Melbourne, 1857–73. President of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, 1890. FRS 1861.
