Franz Bauer

1758–1840

German artist who visited England in 1788. Was pursuaded to remain in England by Joseph Banks, who employed him as botanical painter for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, for the sum of £300 per annum for life. Noted for his detailed botanical drawings of orchids published in Illustrations of orchidaceous plants (London, 1830–8).
