Charles Francis Adams

1807–86

American diplomat. Elected to the Massachusetts legislature as a Whig, 1840; led the state in opposition to slavery. Elected to Congress in 1858 and again in 1860 as a Republican. American minister to London, 1861–8. Published the papers and a biography of his father, the former president, John Quincey Adams (DAB).
