Astronomer. Son of John Frederick William Herschel. Attended Clapham Grammar School, London, 1851–4. BA, Trinity College, Cambridge, 1859. Professor of physics at Glasgow University, 1868–71; University of Durham College of Science, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1871–86.
