Chemist and assayer. Apprenticed to a surgeon. Studied at the Royal College of Chemistry. Assistant, Royal School of Mines. Scientific director, Royal Panopticon, Leicester Square, London, 1854. Head of the rolling-room, Royal Mint, 1856–68. Practised as an analytical chemist and assayer from 1869.
