James Augustus Grant
1827–92
Scottish army officer and explorer. Commissioned in the Indian Army, 1846. Accompanied John Hanning Speke on his expedition to explore Lake Victoria, 1860–3, identifying it as the main source of the Nile. Published A walk across Africa (1864), and contributed to the botany of the expedition. FRS 1873.
