Peter Anthony Motteux
1663–1718
French-born journalist and translator. Of a Huguenot family. Emigrated to London in 1685, becoming an English citizen in 1686. Published a revision of Thomas Urquhart’s translation of the first three books of Rabelais’s Gargantua and Pantagruel, and translated the fourth and fifth books.
