Colonial administrator. Governor of New Brunswick from 1861; Trinidad from 1866; Mauritius from 1871; Fiji from 1875; New Zealand from 1880; and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) from 1883. Knighted 1871. Created Baron Stanmore, 1893.
