Surgeon. Articled to a solicitor, but disliked law. Dispenser, Bradford Infirmary. Studied medicine at King’s College, London, 1846–8. Appointed house surgeon, King’s College Hospital, 1850; demonstrator of anatomy, 1851; assistant surgeon, 1856. Appointed professor of surgery, King’s College, 1871, lecturer on clinical surgery (with Joseph Lister), 1877; emeritus professor of clinical surgery, 1889. Examiner in anatomy and physiology, Royal College of Surgeons, 1875–80; in surgery, 1879–89; in dental surgery, 1883–8; vice-president of the council, 1885; Hunterian Professor, 1884–5. FRS 1871.
