James Hutchison Stirling
1820–1909
Scottish physician and philosopher. Studied at the University of Glasgow, 1833–42. Awarded a diploma by the College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, 1842. Assistant practitioner, Hirwaun ironworks, 1844–6; sole surgeon, 1846–51. Received a large inheritance in 1851. Studied German philosophy in France and Germany, 1851–7. Returned to Britain and wrote works on Hegel from 1857.
