William Mitten

1819–1906

Pharmaceutical chemist and bryologist. Authority on mosses and liverworts. Corresponded with William Jackson Hooker. Resided at Hurstpierpont, Sussex. Described the liverworts for Joseph Dalton Hooker’s Flora Novae Zelandiae (1853–5) and Flora Tasmaniae (1860). Father-in-law of Alfred Russel Wallace.
