Buckley Mathew (1865–1887)
1807–87
Army officer, politician, and diplomatist. Retired from the army in 1841 as a captain in the Grenadier Guards. MP for Athlone, 1835; Shaftesbury, 1838–41. Diplomat mostly in the Americas: minister to Brazil, 1867–79. Substituted Benvenuto for his second given name of Byam, 1835. Added Buckley to his surname in 1865 on inheriting the property of his uncle, Abednego Buckley (d. 1837). Knighted 1879.
