Thomas Wentworth Higginson

1823–1911

American minister, reformer, soldier, and author. A staunch supporter of the anti-slavery movement and the rights of women. Helped provide financial support for slave insurrections. Colonel of a regiment of freed slaves during the American Civil War; publicised the success of these black troops in his Army life in a black regiment (1870).
