American zoologist. Taught at the Columbian College (now George Washington University) from 1860; professor of zoology, 1884–1910. Librarian, Smithsonian Institution, 1862–6. Assistant librarian, Library of Congress, 1866–74. President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1897.
