From F. X. Neumann von Spallart 19 February 1873
I. Getreidemarkt Nr. 10. | Wien
am 19th. of febr. 1873.
Sir,
The proprietors of the “New Free Press”, a paper commanding the largest circulation in Germany, have trusted me with the leadership of the “International Exhibition Gazette” which is to appear as supplement of the “New free Press” every day during the next Vienna Exhibition (: See: the Times 27595)1
I intend to make this gazette the means to inform the public on many scientific topics to which most people have hitherto been strangers, and I think there is no way better adapted for the real understanding of the results of science and the essence of the Exhibition, than the articles of the said journal, when written by great capacities.
Hoping you might visit Vienna next summer, I take the liberty of asking you, Sir, whether you would allow me to put your name down in the list of Correspondents I have been happy enough to secure. The staff of editors and writers consists of a great number of University men in every branch of science.
Allow me to add, that I should be quite satisfied if you would only write one or a few essays in the space of about two columns upon any topic you like best; and it is not absolutely necessary, those articles should only concern the Exhibition; they could also be “Revues” on the results of science in your line.
I beg to forward your kind answer either under my adress or to the the care of the Austrian General-Consul, Chevalier de Schaeffer,2 29 St. Swithins Lane, London E.C.
I remain, dear Sir, Yours | truly | F X Neumann
