Footnotes

For a translation of this letter see Correspondence vol. 17, Appendix I.
Boccardo refers to Boccardo 1869 (in this version, ‘Sismopirologia: earthquakes, volcanoes, and slow oscillations of the ground’: the word ‘slow’ (lente) is apparently not in the printed title of the book). No copy has been found in the Darwin Libraries at CUL or Down.
See Correspondence vol. 16, letter from Gerolamo Boccardo, 23 April 1868. Boccardo refers to Charles Lyell and Boccardo 1868 (Physics of the world).

Illustrious Sir

Accept, I beg you, with your usual kindness, my new book, titled “Sismopirologia–Terremoti, Vulcani e lente Oscillazioni del suolo”, whose only merit is perhaps that of paying to you at every stroke the profound respect I bear towards you.2

I am not sending to England any other copy besides this, since I am afraid that what happened already to my “Fisica del Globo”, of which I made a present to Sir Charles Lyell and several scientific societies, without receiving so much as a sign to assure me that my gift had arrived, will happen to the “Sismopirologia”.3

Grant me, illustrious Sir, your precious forbearance, and believe me full of respect | your most devoted | G. Boccardo
