The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from T. H. Farrer, 20 September 1868. In 1868 the editors of the journal were Charles Cardale Babington, John Edward Gray, William Sweetland Dallas, and William Francis.
CD refers to Thomas Henry Farrer and to Farrer 1868. The enclosure has not been found; however, see the letter from T. H. Farrer, 20 September 1868.
