The date, 3 July, was given in the sale catalogue. The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from Ernst Haeckel, 28 June 1867 (Correspondence vol. 15).
See Correspondence vol. 15, letter from Ernst Haeckel, 28 June 1867. Kanitz had sent the diploma and his photograph to Haeckel with the request that Haeckel forward these to CD. CD was elected a member of the Imperial Royal Zoological and Botanical Society of Vienna on 23 May 1867 (see Correspondence vol. 15, Appendix III). The photograph that Kanitz sent has not been found in the Darwin Archive–CUL.
