Darwin Correspondence Project

To John Murray   15 January [1867]

Down.

Jan 15th

My dear Sir

The type seems to me excellent & I will force a good deal into the smaller size.1 The page, as I understood, will be as large as in Lyell’s new Edit. of Principles.—2

I am rather pleased to hear from Dr Hooker that he is not surprised at my book being big.—3

My dear Sir | Yours sincerely | Ch. Darwin—

Footnotes

CD had evidently received from Murray, or the printer William Clowes & Sons, samples of the smaller print size for which CD would mark the more technical portions of the manuscript of Variation (see letters to John Murray, 8 January [1867] and 10 January [1867], and letter from John Murray, 9 January [1867]). No letter from Murray or Clowes including a sample of the print size has been found.
Murray had mentioned that because of the length of Variation, the pages would have to be the same size as in the tenth edition of Charles Lyell’s Principles of geology (C. Lyell 1867–8); see letter from John Murray, 2 January [1867].
Joseph Dalton Hooker had reassured CD about the size of Variation in his letter of [12 January 1867].

Bibliography

Summary

Approves of type [for Variation]. Pleased to hear from Hooker that he is not surprised that MS is big.
