To T. H. Farrer   10 January 1882

Down Beckenham

Jan. 10th 1882

My dear Farrer.—

I have just received the enclosed & I think it proper to forward it to you, whether or not you read it.1 Will you be so kind as to forward it to Mr Caird,2 if this appears to you a proper & desirable step.— The badness of the varieties which we raised last year is explained by Mr Torbitt’s unfortunate blunder of having used the pollen of a curious, but plainly diseased variety.—3

My dear Farrer | Yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

CD had enclosed a letter from James Torbitt; it has not been found, but see the letter to James Torbitt, 10 January 1882 and n. 2.
James Caird had worked with CD and Farrer to obtain financial assistance for Torbitt’s potato experiments.
Torbitt had sent potatoes to CD, Farrer, and Caird in March 1881 (see Correspondence vol. 29, letter from James Torbitt, 10 March 1881).

Summary

Requests that THF forward an enclosure if he thinks it proper. James Torbitt’s blunder in using the pollen of a diseased variety accounts for the bad varieties raised last year.
