My dear Sir

I beg to acknowledge & thank you for your note of the 22d. enclosing your account & informing me that £197. 12. is placed to my account at Mr Robarts, Curtis & Co.1

I am much obliged by your wish to see me at Alford this summer.—2 I shd. like it much, but I fear other will hardly render it possible.

Rent collected by Higgins on CD’s farm at Beesby. CD had instructed Higgins to place the rent directly with CD’s bankers (Correspondence vol. 3, letter to John Higgins, 27 May [1846]). CD’s Account Book (Down House MS) records the deposit of £197 12s. 10d. on 26 May 1847: ‘Draft from Mr Higgins (due 15th of June).’
Higgins resided in Alford, Lincolnshire, close to CD’s farm at Beesby.
