My dear Sir,

Be so kind as to add an omitted reference to the word “Delpino” p 371 five lines from top in “Cross-Fertilisation” &c (“See also Dr Ascherson’s interesting article in Bot. Zeit. 1871 p 444 et seq on this subject.”)1

Yours sincerely | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

Carus was translating Cross and self fertilisation into German; see letter from J. V. Carus, 20 November 1876. The reference to Paul Ascherson’s ‘Federico Delpino’s Eintheilung der Pflanzen nach dem Mechanismus der dichogamischen Befruchtung und Bemerkungen über die Befruchtungs-Vorgänge bei Wasserpflanzen’ (Federico Delpino’s classification of plants according to the mechanism of dichogamic fertilisation and remarks on the processes of fertilisation in water plants; Ascherson 1871) was added to Carus trans. 1877d, p. 359 n. 2. The change was later made in the second English edition (Cross and self fertilisation 2d ed., p. 372).
