To Karl von Scherzer   22 September 1876

Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

Sep. 22. 1876

Dear Sir

I am much obliged for your kind letter, & for sending me that of Prof. Wagner, together with his Essays— I have written to thank him—1

I am at present much overworked & out of health; therefore I shall not read the essays for some time, & when I do I will write to him.2 Under these circumstances I will not ask you to take the trouble of coming to see me.

I beg leave to remain | dear Sir | yours faithfully | Charles Darwin

Footnotes

Neither Scherzer’s nor Moritz Wagner’s letters have been found. Wagner’s essay ‘Der Naturproceß der Artbildung’ (The natural process of species formation; Wagner 1875) appeared between May and July 1875 in Das Ausland. It was later reprinted in a posthumous collection of Wagner’s essays (Wagner 1889, pp. 282–342). CD’s heavily annotated copy of the article is in the Darwin Pamphlet Collection–CUL.
