Darwin Correspondence Project

To G. S. Ffinden   5 September 1876

Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

Sept 5. 1876

My dear Sir

Although I am not a Churchman, yet under the circumstances specified in the enclosed document (herewith returned) I shall be happy to have my name put down for £25, contingent on a sufficient number of subscribers making up the remainder of the required sum.—1

My dear Sir | Yours faithfully | Ch. Darwin

To the Revd | G. S. Ffinden.

Footnotes

The document has not been found, but was evidently a subscription to increase Ffinden’s living as vicar of Down. CD recorded a payment of £25 for ‘Ffinden living’ under the heading ‘Gifts & Subscriptions’ on 31 January 1877 in his Classed account books (Down House MS).

Summary

Sends £25 subscription, though he is not a churchman.
